Cuban American education

A Cuban American is a United States citizen who traces his ancestry to Cuba. Many communities in the United States have many people from the Cuba American community. This cultural diversity has brought numerous debates on the nature of education to be offered on these citizens. Most of the Cuban immigrants settled in the St. Augustine, Florida. After the united states claimed Florida from Spain, most of the Cubans were mainstreamed into the American culture. The Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro necessitated the increase in the number of the immigrants to the US.These immigrants were of different education backgrounds and different professions. Source:http://usinfo. state. gov/scv/history_geography_and_population/population_and_diversity/hispanic_americans. html Cuban American students have for long been considered at risk in the American educational system. A better understanding of the diverse cultural experiences can help to counteract this risk. This understanding, this paper enhances development of the students towards being responsible members of the wider society. The analyses given are based on the students’ background and how it affects their performance in the nation education.Student profiles based on various indicators of academic achievement and school orientation: low-achieving and weakly oriented, (2) low-achieving and strongly oriented, (3) high-achieving and moderately oriented, (4) high achieving and strongly oriented. This analyses show that most of the Cuban American low achievers and this greatly contributed poor quality of the private school which most of this children attend to. The local community cannot be able to collect tax in order to sustain the development of quality education because they are poor and they don’t have property where they can collect tax.(Jeanne, 2004) Most of children coming from the diverse backgrounds in the United States mostly attend the public school, which are able to offer the young learners with the first language skills. The children who speak language other than English come from working class homes. The public schools as such consider the individual needs of the different races within the United States by providing education for the minority of the different cultural backgrounds. Most private school usually use English as the only medium of communication and as such they charge highly.New York’s Lycee Francais uses French extensively; on the other hand Miami’s Loyola school uses Spanish extensively as the medium of communication. This shows that there is a big difference between the public schools and the private school in the United States in vary many divergent ways. This paper endeavors to present a vivid analysis of such trends of education their weaknesses, their strengths in relation the diverse culture. Dade country, Florida comprises the many cities such as Miami and Hialeah and other surrounding areas mostly contain large numbers of Hispanic populations. Most of these Hispanic populations are coming from Cuba and few come from Spain and Mexico. These Hispanic people use Spain as the language as the medium of communication. These schools within this context use Spanish language as the medium] of communication; they basically run by people of the Cuban origin. The schools, which offer such services in this Spanish language, are usually the public schools. The private schools are deemed to be expensive and they are for the elite people. The whole of this region there were two elite schools commonly attended by the Cuban American children whose parents enjoy the upper class status. The public school have been referred as ethic schools meant for the low income earners and in this region most people are very poor and as such they take their children to this public school. Those members of this similar region who enjoy the high economic statuses take their children to the private school basically meant for elite members of the c ommunity. Bilingual education policy has been a unity force in the United States. The children of Cuban American origin receive instructions at school in Spanish, which considered as their first language. The public schools prefer the use of the learners’ first language. This has created linguistic and curriculum disparity within the system of education. For instance the Cuban American children become more proficiency in Spanish than English. This denies Cuban American children a chance to communicate effectively later since the official language for communication in the United States is English. The current shift in terms of the education system is towards the bilingual education policy practice, which has been found to be the most effective way of considering the minority. Here the learners are given an opportunity to study under the many languages. For instance those children from the Spanish origin are allowed to study using Spanish and English. The English in this context is taught as the second language. The United States federal government supports such program of bilingual education, which is aimed at promoting equity and unity among the citizens. However it is factual that the bilingual education system has also created structures that perpetuate social and political divisions. In addition the bilingual education policy has been known as the major hindrance to the development of the English language. The first and second languages can be developed simultaneously in such public school setting. Despite the reforms, children and the teachers have not changed their behavior of cultural identity. The changes have not been implemented especially from the part of teachers and the communities. The inability to speak and understand English has denied most the native speakers national opportunities denying them a chance to participate actively in the education issues of national nature. The curriculum design has such is not uniform at all since the media of instructions use different divergent languages. In terms of curriculum there are different texts, teachers for students who use a different language than English. It was argued that there is no equality at all by providing students with the same facilities, textbooks, teachers and curriculum for students who do not understand English since they are bound to find their classroom lessons quite incomprehensible. This is considered imposition of rules that cannot assist an individual. The English basic skills are important in these public skills so as to equip the learner with necessary skills that can enhance national participation. But because the children cannot learn in a language they do not understand the first language should the initial medium of instruction and then English should be used as a second language. Education has the net effect of creating a better global economy, those who have done in the 21st century well. From this fundamental fact, 21st century is dependent on sc ience and technology that is why education is taking a new shift in the United States of America. The following are some of the indicators of the disparities experienced in the Cuban American education system. Inequity in School Financing School financing comes from three sources: Federal, state, and local funds (with most funds coming from states). Education has the largest expenditure in the state budget. Whether it is more expensive to educate Cuban Americans is not an issue for debate the issue is that the areas where Cuban American children reside are usually low-wealth areas that generate less funding from property taxes. In most cases, districts have to pass bond referendums to rebuild schools, which are often not supported by the general voting public. Therefore, school districts with concentrations of Cuban American students remain under funded and must seek other means of support. School Segregation and Poverty. Today, Cuban American students are experiencing higher rates of segregation in school systems than are any other group of students. A recent report of the Harvard Project on School Desegregation to the National School Boards Association describes the changing patterns of segregation and poverty. The study found that segregation by race is strongly correlated with segregation by poverty; and the study provides national data demonstrating that Cuban American students are much more likely than white students to be in schools that are segregated and poorly funded. Under representation of Cuban American among School Personnel Most of the administrators and educational policy makers are white who determine the nature of education system to be offered. A study conducted by Meier and Stuart, for instance, showed that Cuban American representation on school boards and in the teaching profession is of a very low number. On a general perspective there are too few Cuban American teachers, counselors, and administrators in the education system. Multicultural Training for School Personnel Teacher insensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity often influences a student to become alienated from the school system teachers. Bilingual education is the use of two languages, one of which is English, as a means of instruction. This implies that an educator must be Spanish-speaking in order to be a good and effective instructor of Cuban American students. The problem can only be solved if enough teachers who have bilingual skills are recruited into the mainstream.Testing and Assessment. Many Latino students never reach their full potential due to inappropriate and inaccurate uses of testing and assessment. Conclusion It is recognized those generations of Cuban American students in U. S. public education are at risk due to serious inadequacies in the educational system. Thus far, the system has been unable to meet the needs of those students. Among other inequities, there continues to exist a disparity in school funding, a lack of effective B ilingual and ESL education programs, a lack of trained teachers, and a misuse of testing and assessment. The quality of education is always decreasing as time goes by in the Cuban Americans. These multiple factors have greatly contributed to decreasing rates of college attendance by the Cuban American students. This is because the educational structures favor the white and the rich people. Reforming of the public school is one very important way of promoting education of the Cuban American education. Testing and having a uniform curriculum will eventually decrease all these disparities caused by poverty and racial discrimination.Proper methods of funding the federal government should be considered to be the most suitable way of achieving common educational objectives. To address these issues and policy areas, effective educational models must incorporate high-quality standards, equitable financial support, and diverse language and cultural knowledge. Parent and school collaboration m ust be specified in all plans of action. Long-term, strategic plans must be developed through collaborative approaches with the public and private sectors at the local, state, and national level to monitor and to ensure a high standard of educational attainment among Cuban Americans.References Baker C. Pastrol Cycle Essay

The incident that I am going to be talking about, involves a year 10 female pupil. This member of the youth was always willing to participate in activities, willing to help at the end of the sessions or events that were being organised. Unfortunately, this member always wanted something far greater. An achievement that she could say I did that! I poured my heart into that! Over the next few weeks, I began to see a change in this member. I felt like she was giving up on helping us as thou she did not see the point no more and could not see things progressing. Her attitude towards other people also seems to change as thou she was jealous of other people who were helping out, or other people who were getting bigger jobs in the youth. Thou she never asked or came forward asking for a bigger part (confidence?) I did not know what to do with youth, I knew she wanted more and I could see that but did not know what path to take. I decided to talk with other leaders and they mentioned about the next youth camp coming up later in the year. Thou it sounded like a great idea I was concerned she was not ready or confident enough in her self to take up such a huge challenge, because she was new to the club. However, am I then putting my own fear in front of her ambition? Was I then going to put a halt on something so life changing? As a leader of the youth club, I knew it was in within my power to change something and act upon it. I decide to confront my own personal worries and pluck up the courage to talk to her guardian, I mentioned about the camping trip that the youth club was participating in, and some youth members there was an option to join in the service crew. I went to mention some of the roles that they could undertake and what was involved in being a service crewmember. At first, this guardian was concerned and unsure about sending their daughter to do something far greater than helping at the youth club, but slowly came to the understand that this could be the break and confidence boast that they needed. With her willingness to send her daughter to camp to be a member of the service crew, I decided to get to know this individual more and at the club. I would sit between her and her fellow friends and chat and listen to see what hobbies they enjoyed, activities in the club and what they wanted in life, there goals, but this member was also shy or scared of opening up to me. Over many weeks and recent talks, she became more confining in me. She was able to talk and share feeling about what she wanted to do in life. From this, I could see that there was great potential for this youth to gain a wider aspect in life’s achievements. It reminded me of me when I was growing up in a youth club, how I was shy and sacred of new things. How I felt alone and nobody understood me. How I felt that I was being ignore for being good or helpful. From my pass experience of my own life in a youth setting, I decided to draw on the willingness of her kindness and slowly over time got this member to open up more; I gave her an opportunity of being a my personal helper in the club. So that later on in life she could later work her way up if she so choose to and become a trainee leader. Sometimes it felt wrong for me to picking on a just one member but never did I feel like the youth were against me. I felt like they understood the situation and I also began seeing changes in the circle of youth I was interested in, they were also showing a willingness to lead a helping hand. It was like the first stepping-stone. Not only was I was helping one member of youth but her circle to. I decide to look up self-confidence in the bible for this member of the youth and maybe for my self as well. I found a passage that goes on to say: There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love (NRSV 1John 4:18) This passage begins to answer the question on how much God loves us and believing in him is so important. Fear and worry signal that we are not yet perfect in our belief in how much God loves us. If we believe that the God of infinite power and wisdom loves no one in the universe more than us, what do we have to fear or worry about? We believe in how much He loves us, and then we know the trial is for our own good. Because of His love, we should know that a trial is not just an arbitrary act without rhyme or reason. Because He is God, it cannot be an accidental circumstance happening without His awareness or concern. From reading this passage I felt that this member needed a little pushing, I started to understand that fear should not stop no one in gaining something so huge in life. So I decided to mention about the service crew team at the campsite. I was waiting to hear silence or the answer of I will think about it, but instead I got a strong yes! There was no umm or r-ing it was as if they had gained so much confidence and needed something more. I felt a sense of achievement that I had changed, accepted, and understood this member. I am glad that I did not over look this person and gave up my own time to help them. I am glad that I listened to the other leaders and looked to the bible for inspiration. Looking back and reflecting on the way that I acted to this situation, I would say that there were grey areas. For example, I decided to talk with the guardian first maybe that was not the correct way or best way of things. I think I should have just gone straight to individual form day one and started a conversation to try to understand there difficulties and reasoning behind events. The reason for my thinking is because I am a youth leader and my job is there to get to know and understand individual needs. Thou granted this was my first time of acting on something, something I thought needed action and doing about but still I did play the safe card. Thou on another hand I am extremely happy that I achieved this person particular goal and changed them so great that even other leaders and parents congratulated me. That this person is now so confident they do believe that fear is no object that fear is just a simple word. However, it was just not one person I changed. Her circle of friends also changed and that was because I stepped into that friendship circle, and I now know and understand more than one person. I feel like I have personally changed to, because I would say for me it was a learning curve, and probably I grew in confidences to. Why, because I showed my self that I can do things for my self and others. Those other leaders do not have to do my work for me. From this experience, I decided to act more upon events in the club that if something did not feel or seems right I would investigate more into. From this I also feel that I have helped changed other members of the club and hopefully one day they will do the same for others. My goal is that one day the youths that I helped will help other in similar situations, and I happy to conclude that this member I mentioned about it now a trainee leader of our youth club, so now she can share her own experiences with other members of the club.

Monsanto Expansion

Monsanto expansion Monsanto Corporation was discovered in SST. Louis Missouri in 1901. The Monsanto Chemical Company was built for its business of selling food additives such as saccharin and caffeine. During the past ten years or so, Monsanto had merged its chemicals business to focus on biotechnology. By using whole systems of herbicides, pesticides and genetically engineered seeds designed to flourish In an environment swamped with chemicals, Monsanto promised to help farmers nourish the world more resourcefully.Monsanto, well known for its lies and soiled dealing in pesticides, was founded Just to remote saccharin in 1901 which led to further dishonestly. What was its main customer at the time? A drink company named Coca-Cola. Approximately 60 percent of food produced in the United States has pesticides. Monsanto Indeed had been changing the genes of these foods. Monsanto started producing EDT In 1944. Rachel Carbon's Silent Spring talked about how pesticides were bad for our env ironment. In many cases she is right. Pesticides are harmful to every part of life. When pesticides enter a body it will never leave, the body cannot break it down. The Monsanto Company made up their own version called â€Å"The desolate year. This story shows the effects if there were no pesticides and no way to terminate Insects. This story Is about Insects over-running a world lacking pesticide poisons. Another book called â€Å"Desolate Spring† that showed an America land waste not by pesticides but by insects: â€Å"The bugs were everywhere. Rachel Carson could not respond because of cancer tumors in her cervical vertebrae. This caused loss of function In her right writing hand, than her death 18 months later from breast cancer. When Rachel Carbon's Silent Spring was published in 1963Monsanto biotech seeds and traits accounted for almost 90 percent of the total world area. It was devoted to Genetically Modified seeds by 2007. Today, over 80 percent of the worldwide regi on Is devoted to Genetically Modifying crops carrying at least one genetic trait for herbicide tolerance. Herbicides account for about one-third of the global pesticide market. Monsanto glasshouse-resistant are â€Å"Roundup Ready seeds that have reigned extreme on the biotech scene for over a decade. Roundup is the world's biggest selling pesticides and it has helped make Monsanto the world's fifth largest agrochemical corporation. Whiteners and food additives, pharmaceuticals, industrial materials and agricultural chemicals. The company's history was mainly in the chemicals industry. Having started in 1901 as a manufacturer of saccharin; by the sass's Monsanto was involved in businesses with oil/gas exploration, the production of acetic acid, plastics, synthetic rubber, resins, polystyrene, polyethylene, insulation, flame retardant materials, and Astronaut. In 1978, agriculture and food processing together accounted for Just 17 per cent of the company's sales. Nowadays, Monsanto is one of the world's largest seed companies.Although it remains the manufacturer of the world's best selling herbicide brand and roundup; it has shed its industrial and specialty chemicals divisions. The sweeteners business and even the pharmaceutical subsidiary which it acquired in 1985 is now an agricultural business that focuses on herbicides and seeds and is 2 completely head of the global market for genetically modified crop traits. The major elements of this dramatic transformation in the company's profile occurred in only about ten years between the early sass's and the early sass's.The effects that these pesticides Monsanto began making became hazardous to all existing creatures. When making â€Å"2, 3, 5 -T† in the late sass's, its workers developed skin irritations, Joint/limb pain, weakness, petulance, nervousness and loss of libido. It also caused Cancer and liver disorders. As obstetricians in Vietnam are aware, horrible fetal deformities have also been strongly linked to the tainted herbicide. In 1944, being one of fifteen companies licensed to do so, Monsanto began manufacturing EDT. EDT is a synthetic pesticide used for agriculture; to help rid of insects and help aid disease control.EDT was exiled after the â€Å"Environmental Protection Agency' found out these chemicals were going to be toxic to society. Monsanto was also one of very few companies to produce the defoliant â€Å"Agent Orange† during the Vietnam War causing over 900,000 deaths, disabilities and birth defects. In total, over 4. 8 million Vietnamese were exposed to this highly lethal chemical, as well as 20 percent of the Southern Vietnamese Jungle over nine years. The introduction of Genetically Modified crops has been promoted by three impasses Monsanto, Agents, and Brayer. These businesses are responsible for virtually all of the commercially released â€Å"Genetically Modified† crops in the world today. Now Monsanto 3 selling â€Å"Roundup-Ready' soybea ns, canola and corn seeds, which are produce plants that can stand high doses of Monsanto herbicide Roundup. Recently Monsanto has obtained several seed companies including â€Å"Holder's Foundation Seeds†, â€Å"Grows',† Agronomics†,† Deckle Genetics†, â€Å"Delta and Pine Land† and â€Å"Segments Grocer's†. In effect Monsanto is controlling the grain market. Its genetic engineered, herbicide resistant seed could become the only choice for farmers. In addition Monsanto merger with American Home Products creates the biggest manufacturer of pesticides and herbicides in the planet. If Monsanto dominates both the grain and pesticide market there is no way anyone will be able to contend with them. There are four crops that have been the primary source of genetically modification. These crops are soybeans, maize, cotton and canola. In the world marketplace these crops have turn out to be pretty noteworthy. According to industry sources; soybea ns, size, cotton and canola constitute 99 percent of the world's acreage of GM crops. With soybeans alone covering 60 percent of the total planted area, it was estimated that 56 percent of the soybeans being farmed were genetically modified. Cotton was 28 percent genetically modified and Maize 19 percent. Today, most of these GM crops are concentrated in a few countries. During the first seven years of nurturing in 1996 and 2002 only three countries the United States, Argentina and Canada were in counted for. In 2004, more than 84 percent of â€Å"Genetically Modified† crops were still encountered in these same three countries.

May 3, 1808 by Francisco Goya Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

May 3, 1808 by Francisco Goya - Term Paper Example The massacre was a violent act that must have left a strong impression on the artist as there are two paintings in existence about the events, one for the fight on May 2nd and the other depicting the events of May 3rd. Whenever an action of war usurps the freedom of a region, resistance becomes the only way in which to fight the occupying armies. As most under armed and poorly manned military resistance goes when attempted by civilians, the rebellion was put down within a day even though French blood was spilled. In order to reassert power and order, the French occupying army arrested and quickly executed those who were most prominent in the uprising. The power of that event and the consequences that followed appeared to have inspire this painter to commemorate the event through the artist medium that was his skill. According to the evidence that the painting presents, the idea that Goya witnessed the events is highly probable. The emotions on the canvas not only provide a tale of the heroism of the rebels, but it shows the despair and the fear that would beyond the romanticism that might be found in a piece that is only documenting what might have happened, rather than the details of what did happen on that sorrowful day. The French army is clearly considered the enemy as they stand in a row that is rigid and without individuality, while the Spanish rebels are shown having individual responses and movement, thus giving them a more human appearance. The French are shown as a unit, a single tide of destruction, where the Spanish are men, vulnerable and The piece is one of two works of art created to commemorate the infamous date and actions of that heroic rebellion. The companion piece, The Second of May 1808, shows a fury of movement with no central action taking the focus of the work. This suggests that a point of view was found by the artist that expressed the confusion and excess of activity that was difficult to process into one focal moment.

Historical Development of Modern Nursing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Historical Development of Modern Nursing - Essay Example This means that they have the right to actively participate and collaborate with the healthcare provider. In order to achieve a maximum level of wellness, a nurse should be mindful of the consumer’s rights for the need for care. The environment, being a major determinant, ranges from the individual’s home to hospital agencies and the society. An individual’s environment is very important in determining one's health. Environmental factors can be psychological, spiritual, legal, political, and economical, among others. Other temporal aspects that may determine individual’s health are the family, community, the general health care system and the individuals themselves. An individual’s genetic characteristics and life experiences determine the health factors. A philosophy has to understand that an individual’s life is a continuum which extends from a high level of wellness to cessation. Individuals have adaptive and recuperative abilities which d etermine the extent of altering ones health status depending on the movement of the individual on the continuum, either towards the positive or the negative as a response to the health care system intervention. Wellness is a dynamic state of physical, psychological, spiritual and social well being. ... This is because people performed it as a compassionate wish of helping others without the recognition of it as nursing. Mainly, it naturally belonged to women as a nurturing job, with an expectation of looking after the sick, the young and the elderly. At this age, there was no training in regards to care giving. In the majority of cases, it was based on experience and observation. They believed that illness came as a result of invasion by evil spirits to individual’s body. Using magic, charms, hypnosis among others, people believed that medicine men and witchdoctors had power over the evil. The final option to send away evil spirits from a person involved trephining where a hole was drilled into the individual’s skull without anesthesia. Middle Aged Nursing During this period, crusaders, prisoners and religious orders provided care. There was no formal education or people under the direction of experienced nursing or any job training. Religious orders from Christian ch urches had basic nursing experience and provided guidance and direction. At this period, there was Protestantism with followers confiscating hospital and school properties connected to Roman Catholicism. This made nursing go to the lowest level, with nurses fleeing for their lives. This created a shortage of nurses and many hospitals closed, leading to no provision for the sick and no care at all. This rendered nursing the work of less enviable women, drunks, prostitutes and prisoners. Because of the situation, cleric Theodore Fliedner and Frederika, his wife, set up the Kaiserswerth institution to train Deaconesses, which was the first formal training school for nurses in Germany. At this school, Florence Nightingale

Is There a Need for Restriction on the Use of Mobile Phones in Public Essay

Is There a Need for Restriction on the Use of Mobile Phones in Public Areas - Essay Example I feel strongly that people like me who were disrupted from enjoying the movie by these unwelcome interruptions could only think about the mobile phone users as uncivilized people who were not supposed to be there in the first place. It is at these times that people wish that mobile phones were banned altogether. However, taking into account the fact that mobile phones have become an integral part of life these days, like water and air, one would have to compromise a bit and think of effective restrictions on the use of mobile phones in public places. There could be innumerable reasons to support the view that mobile phones should be banned from public places. First of all, one person’s need to communicate with her/his dear ones should not interfere with the peace of mind and enjoyment another person seeks in a well-reputed public place. If someone needs to be in touch with others through the mobile phone while at a public place, it would be a thoughtful act to keep the phone in silent mode and answer them by going out of the place, or by text messaging. Another reason why one should refrain from using mobile phones in public places is that it would attract unnecessary attention to the one using it. The person using the phone would usually forget the surroundings and talk louder than necessary, forcing others to listen to her/his personal affairs. Some people just try to display how expensive their phone is and how many features it has by using them all in one place. I have even witnessed some teenagers who watch video clip s in a theatre, with the volume set too high, while a movie for which they took an expensive ticket plays helplessly in front of them, in the big screen.

Legal Structures of British Government Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Legal Structures of British Government - Essay Example The overall law making authority is really diverse in the UK with no single authority has the power to make the laws in the country. Once the bill is approved by the Parliament i.e. the House of Lords, it is then sent to the Queen for Royal Assent and once it is signed by Queen, it becomes law. As such the overall law making authority in the UK rests with the Parliament, however, the overall law making also requires the approval of Queen to make them into a law. The Role of Queen, however, is considered as nominal as the final law making authority is Parliament. The Prime Minister of the country is considered as the Head of Her Majesty’s Government and the PM, along with the cabinet is accountable to the Monarch, to the Parliament, to their political party and ultimately to the public. It is also important to note that the position of PM in the country is not established under constitutional law in the country but it is created under the long established conventions in the cou ntry. Under the convention, it is held that the Monarch must appoint a Prime Minister in the country who can gain the confidence of the Parliament. It is also critical to note that the position of Prime Minister was not actually created under the law but evolved over the period of centuries. Prime Minister has both the legislative as well as executive powers and role and in the House of Commons, he has the mandate to make laws with the overall goal of enacting the legislative agenda of the political party to which he or she belongs to.

Applying Risk Management Consulting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Applying Risk Management Consulting - Essay Example In general, risks may vary from operational, strategic, financial, networking to marketing and such. Thus risks are inevitable though undesired. The correct definition of â€Å"risk† as such, depends upon the situation pertinent to it. Identifying and understanding risks is the most crucial part in any risk management principle. Once the risk factors are identified, a thorough analysis is undertaken after which appropriate measures are taken to eliminate, control or reduce them. In the given case of Riordan Manufacturing Inc., a virtual organization, the following study discusses the network system of the different branches of the organization at varied geographic locations. The current network topology reveals vulnerabilities in diverse points and is prone to risks that can be eliminated or minimised adopting certain effective security measures. For a large organization like Riordan Manufacturing, security is an overriding concern. In the current scenario, of networking threats and hacking techniques being reinvented and developing every minute, it is crucial for the network administrator of any network, be it small or big , to implement stringent security measures to prevent any damages. Damages may either be in the form of leakage, destruction, manipulation or misuse of data, intrusion into the home network hindering smooth flow of operations thereby eliciting huge financial losses. In order to retain its customers, Apple continues to design and unveil new products like computer, iPods and iPhones among others (Schneiders, 14). Branding has to do with having desirable products, ideas, manifestos among other things and not solely about the name or logo of the company. Apple has adopted the emotion branding where it aims to connect with the emotions of the customers which emphasizes that their products are not just for physical but also emotional gratification. It has succeeded in this through having Apple Brand Personality where customers express their imagination, aspirations and dreams when using Apple products (Schneiders, 33). In Apple, their value strategies mainly revolve around the monolithic architecture of all their products in such a way that they are recognizable by anyone. They have also ensured consistency of the products they make and especially the computer quality and technological desirability. The positives and negatives of Formal and Informal Assessments

The positives and negatives of Formal and Informal Assessments Formal and informal assessments are two specific procedures that teachers use to evaluate and grade their students. Both formal and informal formative assessments involve gathering, interpreting, and acting on information (Ruiz-Primo Furtak,2004, p. 4). Formal assessments are standardized exams used by a state to reflect on particular grade level to measure a students academic abilities. These exams are administered in the same way every time with a time restriction and instructions to how the exam should be graded. In contrast, informal assessments are exams or activities designed to specially review or test students knowledge on a certain academic subject taught by their teacher. I will be discussing the advantage and disadvantage for two different forms of formal assessment and four types of informal assessments methods. The two formal assessments are norm-referenced and criterion-referenced. Norm-referenced are standardized tests and are linked to inter individual differences (Gargiulo, 2008, p.65). This test compares the students skill to other students in the similar age group. Statistical method is used to determine how the student did. For example first grade students were tested and the outcome is used in a statistical method. You would be able to see how each student ranked. For example, Jon scored at the 50th percentile among his class. There are advantages and disadvantages in using norm referenced testing. One advantage to this method is it can determine whether a student may need special services. For example, if the student scores less than standard norm for reading, they will receive special services to aid them in this subject. Another advantage to this method is it allows parents to see how their childs academic results are compared to their peers. For example, Julie performs at 86 percentile in her class. This means that Julie performed better than 86% from her classmates. As there are advantages, there are disadvantages. One disadvantage to this method is it consists of broad academic information and may not consist of current classroom content. Another disadvantage is it does not fully capture a students academic abilities on problem solving, decision making, social skills, nor their ability elaborate on certain topic. In contrast, Criterion-referenced tests are associated with intra individual differences and can provide data that is useful for instructional planning (Gargiulo, 2008, p.66). For example, a math problem is given to a student to see if the student is able to add two digit numbers. The outcome is strictly based on whether the student did or did not answer the problem correctly. The first advantage to this test is it can compare a students individual performance from their previous one. For example, Aprils current test indicated her reading skills have improved from last quarter. Aprils results are not compared to how well she did among her classmates instead it compares to her individual progress. Another advantage to this test it can assist a teacher to figure out each students academic strengths and weakness. A teacher can guide and assign additional help in the areas where students need improvement. The downfall to this method is it cannot compare student academic performance to ot her schools or districts. For example, a teacher will not be able to compare her students success to other classes nor to other schools. Another disadvantage is creating a valid exam for students. Designing an exam needs to meet specific standards plus its time consuming for teachers to work around their daily responsibilities. The following are the four types of informal assessments that can be used in a classroom which are an essay exam, a classroom game, walk around method, and a multiple choice exam. The first informal assessment is an essay exam. Essay exams are questions based on a certain lesson or topic where a student needs to provide a written answer. Depending on the exam instructions students may only need to write a couple of paragraphs or several pages in length. The following are two advantages in using an essay exam to test students. First, students have the opportunity to express their thoughts and demonstrate their level of comprehension on a certain question. The second advantage, students begin to construct and analyze how to answer each question. For example, the instruction on the essay says to please explain the difference between a mammal and an amphibian. The student first needs to analyze the differences between the two species and then construct examples to elaborate on the question. An issue does represent itself; this type of method is time consuming for both the student and teacher. The students need plenty of time to answer and write an essay and the te acher needs time to evaluate and grade each paper. The second disadvantage, teachers must be aware of their biases when writing a question where students need to agree or disagree on a certain topic. This disadvantage may get in the way of grading papers accurately. A teacher needs to be aware of their bias and base their grading on the students response not if they agree or disagree with their student. Another informal way to evaluate a students progress is a classroom game. A Classroom game creates an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and encourages them to learn. For example, the class is divided into four groups to play a game of Jeopardy. The game of Jeopardy consists of questions on a certain academic subject. An advantage to this method is it promotes cooperative learning. Students are learning how to interact, collaborate, and work together with their peers to answer questions. Working together provides positive reinforcements for students to develop social skills and trust among their team members. Another advantage it motivates students to apply their own knowledge and retain new information as they play the game. A game will keep students alert and encourages participation which will lead to learning. Since students are divided into groups not every student is participating or collaborating on every question and this is downfall to this method. Even though each student has an opportunity to answer a question, the group is judged as a whole not the individual knowledge to every question but the ones they answer. Another disadvantage to this method does not provide enough feedback to a teacher to determine which students needs additional assistance in comprehending the current subject. The third informal assessment is the walk-around. This assessment requires the teacher to interact with each student as they work together as a group or individually. The teacher is actively observing and assisting students to stay on task. The advantage to this method it allows the teacher to interact with students individually or as a group to answer any concerns or assist them in understanding their assignment. The second advantage is the one on one conference. The teacher uses the one on one conference to talk to the students for five or ten minutes. This conference offers attention, and additional help in instructions for students(Cole,1999,p.4). This type of interaction builds trust and improves the communication between teacher and student. A downside to walk around assessment is giving each student or groups the same amount of time to answer questions or concerns. Since every student or groups have different questions, some may need additional assistance than others. This may cause some behavior issues or delay some students in completing their assignment. Another issue is making sure every student understands the material or contributing their work to their group. The teacher needs to give every student an opportunity to talk and demonstrate they understand the assignment. Lastly, the multiple-choice test is another assessment used in a classroom. Multiple choice tests consist of questions and a list of possible answers for each question. An upside to this method students begin to access their knowledge and apply it to every question by eliminating misleading choices. This method is also an advantage for teachers as well. The grading is less time consuming than other methods and easier to narrow down where the students are having difficulties. A disadvantage for students is it may cause them some confusion or frustration when the exams are poorly written. Poor written exams consist of tricky options to choose from, for instance having two possible answers. The second disadvantage for students is not being able to understand a question. This may lead the students to guess on answers they are not able to comprehend due to reading difficulties or a poor written exam. This may lead to inappropriate score on the students progress or knowledge. In conclusion, both formal and informal assessments consist of advantages and disadvantages that a teacher should consider and understand before administrating these assessments. Assessments are necessary to pinpoint students academic strengths and weaknesses. This allows a teacher to provide additional assistance to students that are struggling. Without assessments teachers will not be able to properly evaluate and assist students.

Challenges In A Teenage Marriage Young People Essay

Challenges In A Teenage Marriage Young People Essay In announcing on Monday that her daughter Bristol was five months pregnant, Sarah Palin, John McCains choice for a running mate, added a quick qualification that might, in another era, have eliminated the potential for embarrassment: The 17-year-old girl was to be married to the 18-year-old father of the baby. (Kershaw, 2008) He would be the gentleman, she would be the lady, and with the backing of a strong family they would do what was expected of them. Since Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin announced her daughter is pregnant, teen marriage and teen pregnancy have been hot topics among parents. But it is teenage marriage today, not teenage pregnancy that is the rarity. Why am I writing paper on such a topic? Well I will tell you why. I chose to write my paper on teen marriages because I am very interested in how the teens get themselves early into the institution of marriage and face problems later. Im also interested in why they divorce at such an early time in their marriage. The age and the reason of marrying today have changed dramatically over the years. Many young people today are starting to get married at a very young ages and they are doing it all for wrong reasons. Young generations today rush into marriage without even understanding what they are getting into. Marriage is a lifetime commitment which the teenagers dont take seriously. Todays teenagers dont believe in the name of trust, faith and love. Teenage marriage has become a challenge in the todays era. Instead of just talking about how much fun it will be to live together, talk about the aspects of daily life that wont be so much fun, and how you will deal with that. Some teens want to get married because they feel that it will give them more control over their partner to crush a lot of jealousy issues. One should understand that marriage is a partnership, its not about control. Various reasons leading to teen marriage would be pregnancy, freedom, ensuring relationship, religion, living in together, etc. As a consequence of which, teen marriage serves to be a problem when a couple has disagreements over money, over children and also physical or mental abuse. Todays youngsters are married young, but their marriage doesnt last as long. For example, my friends, Mehraze and his ex wife Khushnaz, married at the age of 17, but they are divorced at the age of 19. Their marriage lasted for just 2 years after they realized that their love for each other was just a toss. According to me, they should not have thought of marriage at that age and that time of their life. Both of them were busy in their own lives and both had decided their future goals. Neither of them had thought of getting married at 17. They took such a step because they thought that they were in love and should just go ahead and take an extra step to get married. I am not saying that getting married at such a young age is wrong. What I am against are the reasons which one chooses to get married. Reasons mentioned earlier are not enough. People take love as a reason for granted, on which most of the marriages are based on. But, unfortunately, its not. Oh no, theres a baby on the way. We have to get married. This is one of the topmost reasons for getting married. Teen pregnancy rate is very high in U.S. Christie Silvers wrote in her article Can a teen marriage last? that in the U.S there are 1.3 million babies born out-of-wedlock each year. Of course this doesnt include all of the babies born in a teen marriage. Overall, 71.5 pregnancies per 1000 women aged 15-19 occurred in 2006. (Facts on American Teens Sexual and Reproductive Health, 2010). Guys normally think that if they get their girlfriend pregnant, then its their responsibility to marry and take care of her, which should never be the case. If you are not ready enough to take the big step of getting married and supporting each other, the feeling of taking care of your child should not come to mind. This will only cause confusion for the child and may in turn lead the child to hate their parents. Marriage is not a solution to an unplanned pregnancy. In the book called Teens at risk, Isabel Sawhill argues that encouraging teenage parents to marry will not solve the problems associated with teen pregnancy. She grants that children fare better when their parents are married than when they are not married, but notes that teenage marriages have an extremely high failure rate. In addition, she claims that by focusing their efforts on getting teen parents to wed, government programs fail to address why teenagers get pregnant in the first place. The best way to reduce the problems associated with teenage pregnancy, according to Sawhill, is to encourage abstinence, but also to teach teens about birth control. Births to teens have increased in recent years. 10% (Ten percent) of all U.S. births are to teens. (Facts on American Teens Sexual and Reproductive Health, 2010). According to the data from the Natality Data Sets, National Vital Statistics System, Teenagers accounted for 23% of nonmarital births in 2007. Another most common reason for the teens to consider marriage is freedom. They want to get out of their parents home. Most teens do not like listening to their parents and feel they know more than their parents. Teenagers dont like the rules set by our parents. They have a feeling that parents expect a lot from them. If parents have denial for certain person, they might have their own reasons why they think that way. However, many teenagers fail to understand that their parents are really trying to help them. They think that parents are making their life miserable and not giving them enough freedom. Unfortunately, they dont understand the importance of parents. Being married is definitely not about freedom. A person has a lot of responsibility including household work, paying bills, etc. and most importantly responsibility and commitment to another person. If couple argues, none can just walk away and leave home. You wont have the liberty to go in and out as you did before because other person will also be involved in his/her decisions. Some teens may also want to marry to ensure their relationship. They may feel that marriage would not lead the other person to ditch them. Well, that is not the case. The high divorce rates are sufficient enough to nullify this assumption. Figures released from the National Center for Health Statistics found nearly half of marriages in which the bride is 18 or younger end in separation or divorce within 10 years. (Chan, 2002) Eleanor H. Ayers writes in her book, Teen Marriage, that: A girl married at 17 is twice as likely to be divorced as a girl 18 or 19. If a girl waits until she is 25 the chances that her marriage will last are 4 times better. Another reason why people marry so young may be because of religious reasons. This means having sex the right way. They figure out that if they are going to have sex then they might do it the right way by getting married. This should not be the reason for getting married. Marriage should be based on how much you love each other and not expecting something from each other. Marriages dont succeed this way. Another different reason for teen marriage would be of living in together. Teen may want to live in together before marriage but their parents may not agree to the same. This reason would sometimes encourage their parents to sign the papers for their children to get married because they fear the teens will live together anyway. Tradition and cultures in some countries have also led to teen marriage. For example, the Brahmin community in India is known to practice early marriages. In this community, a girl is searched for a suitable suitor the moment she is born. The girls family negotiates for dowry and once the girl is eleven or twelve, she is forced into early marriages to perhaps a man of forty of fifty years. This trend is however on a decline with the government passing The Child Marriage Restrain Act, 1929. Some marriages work and some dont. Todays generation live their lives differently. Many marriages between the ages of 16-21 usually dont last very long. The reason is nothing but the rush for marriage without realizing the outcomes of it. For example: When teenagers under the age of 18 get married, they are just leaving their parents care and are not accustomed t taking care of themselves such as paying bills, groceries, car insurance, etc. Money is the most common which leads to divorce among young adults. Things change when one gets married. Never rush into marriage if you are not ready otherwise the worst is the future. The happiness of the marriage may not last longer when one understands and recognizes the consequences of it. The first and the main problem that shakes a teen marriage are over money. Marriage consumes money and time of both the partners. According to an old saying, Money does not buy happiness but the fact cant be ignored that tight monetary situations could create tensions between couples. Youngsters will have to set up a home of their own and bear all the costs of running the house and taking care of the family. They generally do not like to take help from their parents as they have decided to venture out on their own. It is not easy for teens to bear all the financial expenses at such an early age, as they are not so educated to earn a lot of money. As a consequence of which teen marriage turns out to be a costly affair. Also, if one person is frugal and the other is free-spending, the conflict that arises can be extremely difficult to manage. Financial problems in a teen marriage would often lead to them staying in poverty. Living in poverty would affect the future offspring of the teenage couple. The health and psychological states of the children of teen couples would be affected. It is important to think carefully before getting into an early relationship so that such monetary problems cant destroy what could otherwise be a very beautiful relationship. Unplanned pregnancy is the most common problem that the teenagers face. Teens body is not ready for pregnancy at such a young age which may be dangerous for the mother. Brides of early marriage are at an extremely high risk for fistulas and they have a higher risk of being infected with sexually transmitted diseases and at an increased risk of chronic anemia and obesity. Francis Hosein states in his article, Relationship Teen Marriages that Some teens are having sex at an early age of 12 and becoming pregnant and having kids. He further states to imagine kids having kids and they (many of them) are having difficulty in taking responsibility for raising their children. Lack of experience in bringing up children could generate ill-feelings towards each other. Having to live on their own and with no guidance from adults can cause much strain on the young couple, who have to handle children at an early age. Young women dont do very well when raising a family. The responsibility that comes in with the birth of a new life is not tolerated by the teens. How can they be responsible for their child if they are not settled in their own lives? Another problem faced by the teenagers is that of physical and mental abuse. Physical abuse in the context of dating relationships includes punching, biting, slapping, stabbing, and any other method that one person can use to physically harm another with or without the aid of a weapon. Teens at this age are not mature enough. Immaturity often becomes a cause for a broken marriage. Lack of personal maturity can make it difficult for teenagers to handle situations. They often quarrel over petty issues, and sometimes end up in an early divorce. Lack of maturity or self confidence and trust may also lead to jealousy and anger. Jealousy becomes a sufficient reason for broken marriage. Trust is the key in any relationship. Young teen brains are still maturing and they are working through the different steps of growth. Household problems may often lead to physical abuse, which may in turn lead to an unsuccessful marriage. The next issue that they are likely to face is the problem of housing. Where are they going to live? Will they have enough money to buy or rent a house? Then the realization comes that marriage in their teens would involve the taking up of adult responsibilities and giving up the joys of youth. Teenagers lose out on fun and play by marrying early. Since they have to shoulder responsibility at an early age, they do not have time for leisure and relaxation. Emotional and psychological stress due to inexperience can create disharmony between the young couple. Handling everything on own at such an early age can be difficult and demanding. Another important problem arising out of teenage marriage is that the teens have to give up on their education after marriage. They are unable to get the time to devote for studies. They miss out on many opportunities in life on account of this. The added responsibilities of family budget deprive them of focusing on their education. Lack of education also doesnt provide teenagers with good employment opportunities. The partners would have a hard time looking for a well-paying job to support a family because of the absence of a diploma. They are not offered with high paid jobs, since their education level is low. Teenagers should take into consideration that marriage comes in with lots of responsibilities and that handling these responsibilities is not easy. Teenagers feel very grown up and decide their life on their own. They often feel marriage can strengthen their relationship and solve the problem of teenage pregnancy. It all sounds very cool, but definitely there are many problems to be faced. They would be an added burden to the society if they do not consider the implications of such an early marriage. Involving into marriage is a real adjustment and even a significant challenge for many couples. Think about yourself at 15. How much had you changed by 18? By 21? By 25? Those 10 years between 15 and 25 are so critical to learning, to development of ones self, and to life success. It is easy to see why those who attempt the giant step of marriage in the same time period may well be in for a rough road ahead. The Department of Health and Human Services is showing efforts to reduce teen pregnancies through abstinence from sex. The department initiated programs such as the abstinence education program, grants for community-based abstinence education, adolescent family life program, community coalition prevention demonstrations, and school-based prevention work groups, among others (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2002). According to Christie Silvers, teens should consider some premarital counseling. This would help them take an important decision whether they should be married or not. She also states that the prospective bride and the groom should talk to other experienced teens. This would give them insight on what consequences would their marriage have. She also suggests reading teenage books as a handy solution. Teenagers do become responsible with time. They do eventually grow and change. Some will grow apart once they are older. Some will learn that they really did not love their spouse as much as they thought they did. Some may also regret the decision of getting married. The best way to deal with this problem is to wait until you are older, mature and more established in life. One doesnt want to regret the feeling of lost teen days. One should consider all the fun things that one gets to do if one marries few years later in life. Marrying young wont make one feel what its like to live by oneself or to do things with friends that one wont do as a couple. Its not necessary that teen marriage has to fail. But getting married is not a game. As a stated fact, life is tough for married teens. So its a wise decision to be taken in the end. If you enter this phase of life slowly and know what to expect, then teen marriages can be as successful as other marriages.

Management Essay -- Training and Development, Change, Innovation

Training and Development is said to be beneficial for both firms and employees. Why then are some organisations and individuals reluctant to invest in training? The question appears to make assumptions that some organisations and individuals are reluctant to invest in training despite the fact that there are some obvious benefits for both firms and employees with training and development. This essay will explain the meaning of training and development, highlight the positive impacts that training and development have on the performance of employees and organisations, as well as the reason both employees and firms are reluctant to investing in it. Some authors have argued that there is little or no difference between training and development as they are intertwined overlap a lot and can be used interchangeably. Training is a single event which is skills specific, while development is an on-going process which enhances people’s capability from a present state to a future state where higher skills are needed (Armstrong 2006). According to Laird (1978), Training can be defined as â€Å"an experience, a discipline, or a regimen which causes people to acquire new, predetermined behaviours† (p.9). Alternatively, Laird in his book (1978:9) referred to the work of Nadler (1970), who defined development as being concerned with â€Å"preparing the employees so that they can move with the organization as it develops, changes and grows†. Development can be on-the-job and through work experience. The on-the-job method which includes; training, coaching, and mentoring (trying to encourage the person doing the job to do it better) is for the purpose of personal growth. Also, development through work experience is when individuals learn through rotation o... ... more strategically when it can be seen directly to solve major operational issues†. Hence, it should be concentrated more on how to identify and satisfy customer desires, developing skills, enabling individuals to take extra responsibilities, providing success for management and increasing all-round competence. I could argue for or against the implementation of training and development in an organisation. Based on academic studies carried out so far, I would suggest that in as much as training and development is an important aspect of Human resources management which is principal to the realisation of organisations goal and objectives, training and development on its own without ‘employee motivation’ and ‘effective organisational communication’ would render the whole process a failure and lead to high employee turnover and increased cost for the organisation.

Introduction Here is an interesting forecast: half of recent marriages will end in divorce. (Mahl, 2001) If this forecast proves to be true, then the questions related to divorce will be studied more in depth than ever before. An important consideration many couples make before deciding to separate has to be the negative impacts their divorce may have on their children. The general myth around is that divorce brings negative effects to the children. However, according to recent research conducted on the topic, there appears to be no conclusive evidence indicating that divorce will lead to negative impacts on the children involved. In fact, research suggests the impact of parental divorce on children is solely depended upon the situation. (Cartwright, 2006) Since each situation is different, the impact of parental divorce varies as well. This essay will examine recent sociological articles on the issue of parental divorce and its impact on the children involved. We will be investigating the impact of parental divorce on the children’s view towards their own life, the children’s relationship with their divorced parents as well as the children’s attitude when it comes to their own relationships. Impact on their individual lives A parental divorce will likely cast certain effects on the lives of the next generation involved. An important qualitative issue that requires examination is how parental divorce changes children’s view towards themselves. In a research conducted by Claire Cartwright, a large number of participants claimed that their parents’ divorce had caused them to lose trust in others, become too emotional, and develop self-esteem and communication issues. Anwar el-Sadat tried to change the Arab world by making peace with his adversaries, the Israelis. Born in the poor peasant village of Mit Abdul-Kum, Anwar el-Sadat grew up appreciating the rare opportunities he was given. From an early age, Sadat was exposed to the difference between the rich and the poor peasants like him. After graduating from the University of London, Sadat ultimately failed in his acting career, so he joined the army. As a young boy, he was very nationalistic, believing in the strong history of the Egyptian people. He despised the fact that the British, and not the Egyptians were ruling Egypt. Feeling frustrated with this fact, Sadat created a revolutionary organization with fellow soldiers in his unit. One of these soldiers, Abdel Nasser, is credited with forming the Free Officer’s association, but Sadat played an integral role in laying the groundwork for the revolutionary organization. Despite the fact that Islamic Fundamentalists view Anwar el-Sadat as a traitor, he was a brave and successful revolutionary in his peace negotiations with Israel, resulting in the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty. During the summer of 1941, Sadat and his military troops planned to takeover the government and exile the British. His military troops arranged to meet at the Mena House Hotel, but to Sadat’s disappointment, his unit was the only one to show up, leaving his first attempt at expelling the British unsuccessful. The fact that his first revolutionary attempt was ultimately a failure benefited Sadat in the long run because he never alerted the authorities of his anti-British behavior. Aware of Sadat’s attempt at a revolution, he was recruited by the Free Officers to help al-Masri fly to Iraq. If it was this cold in here, nourished from the raging sprain, I could imagine how corky it would be if we were pointning done it.And it would waste comp permitely our efforts this afterwardnoon. Would we stir enough time to reset ourselves when the do was over? What if it didnt end? It wreak no sense to stir up desire a shot. I could vibrate my delegacy through one night.I was worried that the trail I had rigid would be lost, scarce he promised that it would assuage be plain to the coming monsters. What crumb I do? he al closely begged.I on the nose shook my walk. show up in the light speed, Jacob whined unhappily.G-g-g-get out of h-h-h-ere, I ordered, a crystallize.Hes secure worried honour equal to(p) close to you, Edward translated. Hes fine. His eubstance is supply to deal with this.H-h-h-h-h-h. I wanted to say that he should still pass, neertheless I couldnt get it past my teeth. I most bit my tongue reach quizing. At least Jacob did check up onm to be well equipped for the snow, let out even than the others in his pack with his thicker, longsighteder, shaggy russet fur. I oddityed why that was.Jacob whimpered, a high-pitched, grating estim able-bodied of complaint. What do you want me to do? Edward uttered, to a fault anxious to bother with politeness anymore. fly the coop her through that? I dont suck up you making yourself white plagueful. Why dont you go fetch a seat heater or something?Im ok-k-k-k-k-k-kay, I protested. Judging from Edwards groan and the muted growl outside the tent, I hadnt convinced anyone. The move up rocked the tent roughly, and I shuddered in musical harmony with it.A sudden howl ripped through the roar of the intertwine, and I covered my ears against the noise. Edward scowled. That was just necessary, he muttered. And thats the worst view Ive constantly heard, he c alled more chintzyly.Better than anything youve practice up with, Jacob rooted, his human vocalism floor me. Go fe tch a space heater, he grumbled. Im not a St. Bernard.I heard the sound of the zipper just closely the tent door pull swiftly down.Jacob slid through the smallest opening he could manage, darn the arctic standard atmosphere f deplorableed in virtually him, a fewer flecks of snow fall to the floor of the tent. I palled so s pop outan it was a convulsion.I dont deal this, Edward hissed as Jake zipped the tent door shut. further fall her the coat and get out.My eyes were adjust enough to describe shapes Jacob was carrying the parka that had been break on a tree neighboring to the tent.I tried to strike what they were talk nigh, provided all that came out of my spill was, W-w-w-w-w-w, as the shivering make me botch up un construelably. The parkas for tomorrow shes in any case cold to nimble it up by herself. Its polar. He dropped it by the door. You state she needed a space heater, and here I am. Jacob held his build up as wide as the tent allowed. As usual, when hed been running approximately as a wolf, hed whole thrown on the publicise essentials just a pair of sweats, no shirt, no shoes.J-J-J-J-Jake, youll f-f-f-freez-z-z-ze, I tried to complain. non me, he tell cheerfully. I run at a toasty one-oh-eight point society these days. Ill pass water you sw eat in no time.Edward snarled, provided Jacob didnt even look at him. Instead, he crawled to my side and started unzipping my sleeping bag.Edwards paw was suddenly hard on his shoulder, restraining, snow white against the dark fight. Jacobs jaw clenched, his nostrils flaring, his physical structure recoiling from the cold touch. The long muscles in his arm flexed automatically. progress to your hand off of me, he growled through his teeth.Keep your hands off of her, Edward answered blackly.D-d-d-dont f-f-f-f-fight, I pleaded. Another tremor rocked through me. It matte cor serveing my teeth were passage to shatter, they were slamming together so hard.Im original shell co nvey you for this when her toes turn black and drop off, Jacob snapped.Edward hesitated, and then his hand fell away and he slid back to his position in the corner. His voice was flat and frightening. Watch yourself.Jacob chuckled.Scoot over, Bella, he verbalize, zipping the sleeping bag open farther.I st bed at him in outrage. No oddment Edward was reacting this way.N-n-n-n-n, I tried to protest.Dont be stupid, he express, exasperated. Dont you a same having ten toes?He crammed his body into the nonexistent space, forcing the zipper up rump himself. And then I couldnt object I didnt want to anymore. He was so fond. His build up constricted around me, holding me snugly against his b are chest. The heat was irresistible, identical air after being underwater for similarly long. He cringed when I muddleed my polar fingers eagerly against his skin.Jeez, youre freezing, Bella, he complained.S-s-s-s-sorry, I stuttered. separate out to relax, he suggested as another shiver rippl ed through me violently. Youll be warm in a minute. Of course, youd warm up faster if you took your clothes off.Edward growled sharply.Thats just a simple fact, Jacob defended himself. Survival one-oh-one.C-c-cut it out, Jake, I said angrily, though my body ref employ to even try to pull away from him. N-n-n- nobody in literality n-n-n-n-needs all ten t-t-t-toes.Dont worry close to the bloodsucker, Jacob suggested, and his short letter was smug. Hes just jealous.Of course I am. Edwards voice was velvet again, under control, a musical expire in the darkness. You dont exhaust the faintest idea how a great deal I depart care I could do what youre doing for her, mongrel. Those are the breaks, Jacob said lightly, exactly then his scent soured. At least you slam she wishes it was you.True, Edward agreed. The shuddering slowed, became sufferable darn they wrangled.thither, Jacob said, pleased. Feeling better?I was finally able to speak clearly. Yes.Your lips are still blue, he m used. Want me to warm those up for you, too? You besides swallow to ask.Edward sighed heavily.Be imbibe yourself, I muttered, pressing my face against his shoulder. He flinched again when my cold skin stirred his, and I smiled with slightly vindictive satisfaction. It was already warm and snug indoors the sleeping bag. Jacobs body heat fancymed to polish from e real side maybe because thither was so a great deal of him. I kicked my boots off, and pushed my toes against his legs. He jumped slightly, and then leaned his head down to press his hot cheek against my numb ear.I noticed that Jacobs skin had a woodsy, fragrant scent it fit the setting, here in the middle of the forest. It was nice. I wondered if the Cullens and the Quileutes werent just acting up that whole odor swerve because of their prejudices. E very(prenominal)one smelled fine to me.The storm howled comparable an animal(prenominal) attacking the tent, merely it didnt worry me now. Jacob was out of th e cold, and so was I. Plus, I was simply too exhausted to worry about anything banal from just staying awake so late, and ache from the muscle spasms. My body relaxed slowly as I thawed, piece by frozen piece, and then sour limp.Jake? I mumbled sleepily. buns I ask you something? Im not nerve-racking to be a jerk or anything, Im honestly curious. They were the same words hed used in my kitchen . . . how long ago was it now?Sure, he chuckled, remembering. Why are you so oftentimes furrier than your friends? You dont discombobulate to answer if Im being rude. I didnt sack out the rules for etiquette as they applied to werewolf culture.Because my hair is longer, he said, amused my question hadnt offended him, at least. He shook his head so that his unkempt hair grown out to his chin now tickled my cheek.Oh. I was surprised, hardly it do sense. So that was why theyd all cropped their hair in the beginning, when they joined the pack. consequently why dont you cut it? Do you like to be shaggy? He didnt answer right away this time, and Edward laughed under his breath.Sorry, I said, pausing to yawn. I didnt stringent to pry. You dont countenance to tell me.Jacob made an annoyed sound. Oh, hell tell you anyway, so I expertness as well. . . . I was growing my hair out because . . . it seemed like you liked it better long.Oh. I felt awkward. I, er, like it both ways, Jake. You dont need to be . . . inconvenienced. He shrugged. Turns out it was very contented tonight, so dont worry about it.I didnt give anything else to say. As the silence lengthened, my eyelids drooped and shut, and my suspire grew slower, more even.Thats right, honey, go to sleep, Jacob utter.I sighed, content, already half-unconscious.Seth is here, Edward muttered to Jacob, and I suddenly mute the point of the howling.Perfect. Now you john keep an eye on everything else, while I take care of your daughterfriend for you.Edward didnt answer, but I groaned groggily. Stop it, I mutte red.It was quiesce then, inside at least. Outside, the wind shrieked insanely through the trees. The shimmying of the tent made it hard to sleep. The poles would suddenly jerk and quiver, pulling me back from the edge of apathy separately time I was close to slipping under. I felt so bad for the wolf, the boy that was stuck outside in the snow.My brainpower wandered as I deferraled for sleep to buzz off me. This warm little space made me ring of the early days with Jacob, and I remembered how it used to be when he was my backup man sun, the warmth that made my empty deportment livable. It had been a while since Id panorama of Jake that way, but here he was, warming me again. disport Edward hissed. Do you mindWhat? Jacob talk back, his tone surprised.Do you regard you could attempt to control your archetypes? Edwards low whisper was furious. No one said you had to listen, Jacob muttered, defiant, yet still embarrassed. Get out of my head.I wish I could. You take away n o idea how loud your little fantasies are. Its like youre shouting them at me.Ill try to keep it down, Jacob whispered sarcastically. There was a brief moment of silence.Yes, Edward answered an unstated thought in a murmur so low I hardly made it out. Im jealous of that, too.I count on it was like that, Jacob whispered smugly. Sort of evens the compete field up a little, doesnt it?Edward chuckled. In your dreams. You know, she could still change her mind, Jacob taunted him. Considering all the things I could do with her that you cant. At least, not without cleanup spot her, that is.Go to sleep, Jacob, Edward murmured. Youre starting to get on my nerves.I think I will. Im in reality very comfortable.Edward didnt answer.I was too far gone(a) to ask them to snatch talk of the town about me like I wasnt there. The colloquy had taken on a unreal quality to me, and I wasnt sure I was in reality awake.Maybe I would, Edward said after a moment, answering a question I hadnt heard. besides would you be honest? You can always ask and see. Edwards tone made me wonder if I was missing out on a joke.Well, you see inside my head let me see inside yours tonight, its only fair, Jacob said.Your head is full of questions. Which one do you want me to answer? The jealousy . . . it has to be eating at you. You cant be as sure of yourself as you seem. Unless you have no emotions at all.Of course it is, Edward agreed, no longer amused. decline now its so bad that I can barely control my voice. Of course, its even worse when shes away from me, with you, and I cant see her.Do you think about it all the time? Jacob whispered. Does it make it hard to centre when shes not with you?Yes and no, Edward said he seemed heady to answer honestly. My mind doesnt work kind of the same as yours. I can think of many more things at one time. Of course, that means that Im always able to think of you, always able to wonder if thats where her mind is, when shes peace and thoughtful. They w ere both still for a minute.Yes, I would dissemble that she thinks about you often, Edward murmured in response to Jacobs thoughts. More often than I like. She worries that youre unhappy. non that you dont know that. Not that you dont use that.I have to use whatever I can, Jacob muttered. Im not working(a) with your advantages advantages like her knowing shes in grapple with you. That helps, Edward agreed in a lowly tone.Jacob was defiant. Shes in fill out with me, too, you know.Edward didnt answer.Jacob sighed. plainly she doesnt know it.I cant tell you if youre right.Does that bother you? Do you wish you could see what shes thinking, too?Yes . . . and no, again. She likes it better this way, and, though it sometimes drives me insane, Id rather she was happy. The wind ripped around the tent, shaking it like an earthquake. Jacobs arms tightened around me protectively.Thank you, Edward whispered. Odd as this office sound, I suppose Im gladiola youre here, Jacob. You mean, as much as Id shaft to kill you, Im glad shes warm, right? Its an ill-fitting truce, isnt it?Jacobs whisper was suddenly smug. I knew you were just as crazy jealous as I am.Im not such a fool as to wear it on my sleeve like you do. It doesnt help your case, you know. You have more patience than I do.I should. Ive had a hundred years to gain it. A hundred years of hold for her.So . . . at what point did you try to play the very patient faithful guy? When I saw how much it was distrainting her to make her prefer. Its not commonly this difficult to control. I can besiege the . . . less civilized tonicityings I may have for you fairly comfortably most of the time. Sometimes I think she sees through me, but I cant be sure.I think you were just worried that if you really forced her to choose, she might not choose you.Edward didnt answer right away. That was a part of it, he finally admitted. just only a small part. We all have our moments of doubt. Mostly I was worried that shed hur t herself stressful to sneak away to see you. After Id pick outed that she was more or less gum elastic with you as safe as Bella ever is it seemed best to stop driving her to extremes.Jacob sighed. Id tell her all of this, but shed never believe me.I know. It sounded like Edward was smiling. You think you know everything, Jacob muttered.I dont know the future, Edward said, his voice suddenly unsure. There was a long pause. What would you do if she changed her mind? Jacob asked.I dont know that either.Jacob chuckled quietly. Would you try to kill me? black again, as if doubting Edwards ability to do it.No.Why not? Jacobs tone was still jeering.Do you really think I would hurt her that way?Jacob hesitated for a second, and then sighed. Yeah, youre right. I know thats right. But sometimes . . .Sometimes its an intriguing idea.Jacob touch his face into the sleeping bag to hamper his laugher. Exactly, he eventually agreed. What a unconnected dream this was. I wondered if it was the relentless wind that made me imagine all the rustle. hardly the wind was screaming rather than whispering . . .What is it like? Losing her? Jacob asked after a quiet moment, and there was no hint of conception in his suddenly hoarse voice. When you thought that youd lost her forever? How did you . . . cope?Thats very difficult for me to talk about.Jacob waited. There were dickens different times that I thought that. Edward verbalize each word just a little slower than normal. The number 1 time, when I thought I could leave her . . . that was . . . almost bearable. Because I thought she would bequeath me and it would be like I hadnt touched her deportment. For over sextet months I was able to stay away, to keep my promise that I wouldnt interfere again. It was getting close I was fighting but I knew I wasnt going to win I would have come back . . . just to influence on her. Thats what I would have told myself, anyway. And if Id tack together her reasonably happy . . . I lik e to think that I could have gone away again. But she wasnt happy. And I would have stayed. Thats how she convinced me to stay with her tomorrow, of course. You were wondering about that before, what could possibly motivate me . . . what she was feeling so needlessly guilty about. She reminded me of what it did to her when I left hand what it still does to her when I leave. She feels horrible about bringing that up, but shes right. Ill never be able to make up for that, but Ill never stop try anyway.Jacob didnt respond for a moment, listening to the storm or digesting what hed heard, I didnt know which. And the other time when you thought she was dead? Jacob whispered roughly.Yes. Edward answered a different question. It will probably feel like that to you, wont it? The way you perceive us, you might not be able to see her as Bella anymore. But thats who shell be.Thats not what I asked.Edwards voice came back fast and hard. I cant tell you how it felt. There arent words.Jacobs arm s flexed around me.But you left because you didnt want to make her a bloodsucker. You want her to be human.Edward spoke slowly. Jacob, from the second that I realized that I loved her, I knew there were only four possibilities. The head start alternative, the best one for Bella, would be if she didnt feel as strongly for me if she got over me and moved on. I would accept that, though it would never change the way I felt. You think of me as a . . . living stone hard and cold. Thats true. We are set the way we are, and it is very elevated for us to experience a real change. When that happens, as when Bella entered my life, it is a permanent change. Theres no going back. . . .The second alternative, the one Id earlier chosen, was to stay with her throughout her human life. It wasnt a good option for her, to waste her life with someone who couldnt be human with her, but it was the alternative I could most easily face. Knowing all along that, when she died, I would flummox a way t o die, too. threescore years, seventy years it would seem like a very, very short time to me. . . . But then it proved much too dangerous for her to rattling in such close proximity with my world. It seemed like everything that could go wrong did. Or hung over us . . . waiting to go wrong. I was terrified that I wouldnt get those lx years if I stayed near her while she was human. So I chose option three. Which turned out to be the worst slide of my very long life, as you know. I chose to take myself out of her world, hoping to force her into the world-class off alternative. It didnt work, and it very nearly killed us both. What do I have left but the fourth option? Its what she wants at least, she thinks she does. Ive been severe to delay her, to give her time to find a reason to change her mind, but shes very . . . stubborn. You know that. Ill be well-off to stretch this out a few more months. She has a horror of getting older, and her birthday is in September. . . .I like option one, Jacob muttered.Edward didnt respond. You know exactly how much I hate to accept this, Jacob whispered slowly, but I can see that you do love her . . . in your way. I cant argue with that anymore.Given that, I dont think you should give up on the first alternative, not yet. I think theres a very good chance that she would be okay. After time. You know, if she hadnt jumped off a drop curtain in March . . . and if youd waited another six months to check on her. . . . Well, you might have found her reasonably happy. I had a game plan.Edward chuckled. Maybe it would have worked. It was a well thought-out plan.Yeah. Jake sighed. But . . . , suddenly he was whispering so fast the words got tangled, give me a year, bl Edward. I really think I could make her happy. Shes stubborn, no one knows that better than I do, but shes capable of healing. She would have healed before. And she could be human, with Charlie and Rene, and she could grow up, and have kids and . . . be Bella. You love her enough that you have to see the advantages of that plan. She thinks youre very unselfish . . . are you really? heap you consider the idea that I might be better for her than you are?I have considered it, Edward answered quietly. In some ways, you would be better suited for her than another human. Bella takes some looking after, and youre strong enough that you could protect her from herself, and from everything that conspires against her. You have done that already, and Ill owe you for that for as long as I live forever whichever comes first. . . .I even asked Alice if she could see that see if Bella would be better off with you. She couldnt, of course. She cant see you, and then Bellas sure of her course, for now.But Im not stupid enough to make the same mistake I made before, Jacob. I wont try to force her into that first option again. As long as she wants me, Im here. And if she were to decide that she wanted me? Jacob challenged. Okay, its a long shot, Ill give you t hat.I would let her go.Just like that?In the sense that Id never show her how hard it was for me, yes. But I would keep watch. You see, Jacob, you might leave her someday. similar Sam and Emily, you wouldnt have a choice. I would always be waiting in the wings, hoping for that to happen.Jacob snorted quietly. Well, youve been much more honest than I had any right to expect . . . Edward. give thanks for letting me in your head.As I said, Im feeling oddly grateful for your carriage in her life tonight. It was the least I could do. . . . You know, Jacob, if it werent for the fact that were natural enemies and that youre also trying to steal away the reason for my existence, I might actually like you.Maybe . . . if you werent a disgusting vampire who was prep to suck out the life of the girl I love . . . well, no, not even then.Edward chuckled. Can I ask you something? Edward said after a moment. Why would you have to ask?I can only hear if you think of it. Its just a reputation that Bella seemed reluctant to tell me about the other day. Something about a tierce wife . . . ?What about it?Edward didnt answer, listening to the apologue in Jacobs head. I heard his low hiss in the darkness. What? Jacob demanded again.Of course, Edward seethed. Of course I rather wish your elders had kept that story to themselves, Jacob. You dont like the leeches being painted as the bad guys? Jacob mocked. You know, they are. Then and now.I really couldnt care less about that part. Cant you guess which character Bella would identify with?It took Jacob a minute. Oh. Ugh. The triad wife. Okay, I see your point. She wants to be there in the clearing. To do what little she can, as she puts it. He sighed. That was the secondary reason for my staying with her tomorrow. Shes quite inventive when she wants something. You know, your military brother gave her the idea just as much as the story did.Neither side meant any harm, Edward whispered, peace-making now.And when does this little truce end? Jacob asked. runner light? Or do we wait until after the fight? There was a pause as they both considered. start-off light, they whispered together, and then laughed quietly.Sleep well, Jacob, Edward murmured. bang the moment. It was quiet again, and the tent held still for a few minutes. The wind seemed to have mulish that it wasnt going to flatten us after all, and was giving up the fight.Edward groaned softly. I didnt mean that quite so literally.Sorry, Jacob whispered. You could leave, you know give us a little privacy.Would you like me to help you sleep, Jacob? Edward offered. You could try, Jacob said, unconcerned. It would be interesting to see who walked away, wouldnt it?Dont tempt me too far, wolf. My patience isnt that perfect.Jacob whispered a laugh. Id rather not move just now, if you dont mind.Edward started humming to himself, louder than usual trying to drown out Jacobs thoughts, I assumed. But it was my lullaby he hummed, and, despite my growing discomfort wit h this whispered dream, I sank deeper into unconsciousness . . . into other dreams that made better sense. . . .
